JHU SAIS Europe Integration Fund Information and Submission Guidelines

The Johns Hopkins SAIS Europe Integration Fund is a program aimed at fostering deeper integration and cooperation between the SAIS Europe campus and the broader Johns Hopkins University community — it seeks to promote cross-campus collaborations to enrich the school's academic and research landscapes.

The initiative supports various activities such as Teaching Exchanges, Joint Research Projects, Collaborative Events, and Staff Exchanges.

The application process involves submitting proposals outlining the proposed activities, involved counterparts, and budget details. Successful projects are selected by the Integration Fund Committee based on their potential to enhance integration and understanding between SAIS Europe and sister campuses.

Real-Life Experiences: Voices from the Integration Fund

Since its inception, the Integration Fund has supported a wide range of initiatives, fostering collaboration between faculty and staff from JHU, SAIS DC, and HNC with their counterparts at SAIS Europe. These partnerships have not only strengthened academic connections but have also provided invaluable real-world experiences for scholars and researchers. The Integration Fund continues to make a difference by enabling faculty and staff to cross borders—both physically and intellectually—strengthening SAIS as a truly global institution.

ANDERSON SCHOLARS

Professor Matthias Matthijs Dean Acheson Chair of International Political Economy at SAIS DC
Jan/Feb 2024 - Short Stay

"Spending time in Bologna was incredibly valuable. As someone working on European political economy and geoeconomics, there is no substitute for engaging directly with people in Europe. The conversations I had—whether with colleagues, students, or other connections—challenged my ideas and enriched my research in ways that wouldn’t be possible from Washington."

What makes SAIS Europe special is the intellectual environment. In Bologna, students are deeply engaged in learning for its own sake. It’s a unique academic experience—one that fosters genuine debate, critical thinking, and a strong connection between faculty and students."

Professor Lisel Hintz Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)
January 2023 – January 2024

"Being at SAIS Europe gave me the rare opportunity to extract myself from the constant activity of Washington, DC, and create a dedicated space for writing and research. I made significant progress on my book project, engaged deeply with European colleagues, presented my work in Florence and Barcelona, and traveled to Turkey for fieldwork – all of which would have been much harder from the U.S."

"SAIS Europe provided an incredible space for deep intellectual engagement. The collegial environment, the close interactions with faculty and students, and the opportunity to immerse myself in European perspectives all enriched my work and helped me grow as a scholar. The opportunity in particular to take Italian classes allowed me to begin, even in basic ways to gain local perspectives on politics – from reading graffiti on buildings and protest banners at demonstrations to watching Italian media content and listening to students in cafes."

"The February 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria were a defining moment during my time in at SAIS Europe. The ability to bring together students and faculty to process what was happening in real-time, and to provide an online writing community from my base in Bologna to scholars struggling across multiple time zones was something profoundly meaningful. The solidarity we built in those writing sessions has endured and expanded creating an ongoing base of support for MENA scholars based around the world."
