Transnational Authoritarian Politics

States governed by authoritarian regimes appear to be gaining ground in global politics. But what exactly would a transnational politics dominated by autocracies look like? Several studies document the increased influence of autocracies not only in formal arenas like international organizations and regional organizations, but also in less institutionalized domains of world politics like global media, sports and cultural diplomacy, and transnational violence. Fewer studies tie these domains together into a complete picture that allows us to think about "transnational authoritarian politics" more holistically. Drawing on recently published work as well as work-in-progress, this talk will present the current state of research on how the global resurgence in authoritarianism is changing global politics and present a framework for how to think about it.
ALEXANDER DUKALSKIS
Alexander Dukalskis is head of the School of Politics & International Relations at University College Dublin. His research and teaching interests include authoritarian politics, human rights, and Asian politics. He is the author of three books, Dictating the Agenda: The Authoritarian Resurgence in World Politics (Oxford University Press, 2025, co-authored with Alexander Cooley), Making the World Safe for Dictatorship (Oxford University Press, 2021) and The Authoritarian Public Sphere (Routledge, 2017), as well as academic articles in several leading journals such as International Organization, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Security Studies, China Quarterly, among others. He is also a frequent expert commentator in national and international media.
