Ali Aydin Karamustafa is Associate Fellow at SAIS Europe
Dr. Karamustafa is a historian of Eurasia in the "early modern" period (between 1200-1800), predominantly of Turkish and Persian speaking regions which today fall in the Middle East and Central Asia. He studies the connections between popular epic traditions, cultural memory, and official historical narratives with a special focus on tribes and nomadic peoples. He is also interested in how historical narratives and mythology are deployed by countries of these regions today for political and economic ends. PhD in history, Stanford University (2020).
