The Sources of Russian Conduct
October 7, 2024

Sergey Radchenko
Wilson E. Schmidt Distinguished Professor
Director, Bologna Institute for Policy Research
News Description
This article reviews Professor Radchenko's recent book, “To Run the World: The Kremlin's Cold War Bid for Global Power." In the book, Professor Radchenko explores how Soviet leaders, from Stalin to Gorbachev, sought recognition as equals to the U.S., a goal Putin has pursued as well, but often felt denied by the West, especially after NATO's expansion. Radchenko argues that dismissing Putin's threats, especially related to NATO and nuclear weapons, is dangerous. While Putin may not want direct conflict with NATO, escalating tensions could push him to act decisively.
